In Matthew 3 we read that John the Baptist is preparing the hearts of his Jewish followers for the arrival of the Messiah through baptism.
It was during this ministry of John that Baptist he baptized Jesus. As followers of Jesus, like our Savior, we are baptized today as a reflection of Christian faith.
We believe that to be Biblically baptized is to be immersed; to go under water. This best reflects the historical use of the word, "baptism" and the picture of what has happened in the one being baptized.
When one goes under the water in baptism he or she reflects that they have, died to their old self, and when they rise from the water, they have, risen again new in Christ.
This is what happens in our lives after we put our faith in Jesus. Baptism by immersion is meant to be a reflection of this work in our lives.
Christian baptism is only seen performed on those in the Bible who have put their faith in Christ (Mark 16:16). There are no infant baptisms in the Bible. Therefore, we believe that a Biblical baptism is performed after a child or an adult has made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior.
There are some traditions that teach baptism is something that must be performed in order for one to be saved. We believe the Bible teaches clearly that we are saved by grace through faith alone, not by works (Ephesians 2:8-9). Therefore, we do not believe baptism is necessary for salvation.
